Leto’s Joker will come as the third major villain to be included in the Synder Cut alongside Ray Porter’s Darkseid and a new and improved version of Steppenwolf from the original release of Justice League. The iconic Batman villain was last seen taking out a handful of guards surrounding Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn and releasing her after she believed he had been killed, setting up the potential for even more mayhem after the events of Suicide Squad.
In a recent interview with Grace Randolph on the Beyond the Trailer Youtube channel, DCEU director Zack Snyder expanded on what fans should expect from Jared Leto’s Joker when he appears in the Snyder Cut of Justice League. Expected to still take place after Suicide Squad in the DCEU timeline, Snyder gave this quote teasing what the classic Batman villain has been through since his first movie
I wanted to of course, you know, honor what had been crated with him, because I thought it was really cool…Some water has gone under the proverbial bridge between when last we saw Joker and this appearance, so yeah, he’s made some…he’s a road-weary Joker.
These two post don’t provide anything definitive about what should be expected for the Joker’s return in the DCEU, but they do indicate something new and exciting when the Snyder Cut ultimately debuts next year. Jared Leto’s first performance as the Joker came with its fair share of controversy, notably that he only had about ten minutes of screen time, and there are also major behind-the-scenes issues to take into account with director David Ayer accusing Geoff Johns of butchering his original story.
